January-A Dry One

January was about as dry as I can remember throughout the years. Snowmobiling/skiing on dirt and ice.  Following skin tracks that had been cut in 5 weeks prior.  Skinning over low elevation sticks, brush, rocks and downfall.  A rotten, faceted base layer that plagued us with unstable avalanche conditions most of the month, and provided bottomless pole plants, and some of the worst skinning conditions in recent memory.  To say that my motivation to continue heading out was tested to its core would be an understatement.   But, I am dumb, or crazy, or obsessed, or scared to let go of something that has been so important to me for most of my adult life.  Maybe all of the above.   There was snow on the ground, and although almost no fresh most of the month, it stayed preserved incredibly well with the low angle of the sun and short days.  If you fought through the challenges of the approach, we really got some nice days with outstanding January weather.
