April 10th-The last powder of the year?

April was a tough one this year.  Large fluctuating temperature swings, and no really big spring dumps made it more challenging for the weekend warrior to catch prime days.  It seemed low elevation snow left much faster than average and it was either too hot, or we were on the ridge of a cold front with unsettled weather and minor precipitation.  Not being out the weekend prior due to no refreeze in 4 days at elevation and higher than average high temps- we decided to head out for a low committal tour just shy of a big front moving in for the rest of the weekend. A high committal tour did not look promising.  Lack of low elevation snowpack indeed created challenging access but eventually we made it into a local spot that is protected from the wind and typically has protected snow.  Although most all other snow was in rough shape from heat and high winds these two protected areas were in great shape and provided some amazing powder riding and face shots before the front moved in and chased us out in near blizzard conditions.  It was sad to admit but this was likely the last day of face shots for the season, but it sure felt good to ride some steep powder
