Early Season

I have been out poking around the typical local early season destinations a decent amount this early season.  To my surprise the snowpack is even thinner than I would have guessed.  Just as can be expected the structure of the pack is also in rough shape with the numerous cold, clear nights wreaking havoc on the thin unprotected snow.  We have also had some interesting wind events leaving typically snow loaded terrain bare which has been interesting.  I will be very curious to see what happens in the near future as this structure begins to load.  Until then I will keep high hopes for a few snow storms.

Aside from the current pack, I have had to poke around more than normal to find good snow, but there have been a few great outings that produced surprisingly good turns.  It is just great to be out skinning and wandering the hills again.  I do hope we get a little more low elevation snow soon though as I am getting anxious to ski out of these areas as opposed to carrying my gear on my back while hiking out.  Oh early season.....time will tell.
